What to Expect: Tips on Navigating Paid Leave as an Employee of a Small Company

G&A Partners Corporate Human Resources Director Suzanne Bowling provides steps employees can take to help them secure leave from their small employer in the What to Expect article, “What You Need to Know About Paid Leave if You Work for a Small Company.”

In the article, Bowling discusses the importance of early, proactive communication, planning, and collaboration with your employer when requesting parental leave.

"Putting together a plan of anticipated leave dates and how your absence can be covered is an excellent way of showing your employer that you are willing to work with them on the leave," Bowling says in the article. "Those who communicate early and offer solutions to cover their work are probably more likely to succeed."

Bowling also suggests doing your research on a state and federal level and bringing this information to the conversation with your employer.

“Maybe the FMLA doesn't apply,” says Bowling, “but you can ask about how the company handles medical leave.”
